Calgary, Sep 12: The Mangalorean Catholic community of Calgary celebrated the solemn feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Monthi Fest) on September 6 at St Thomas More Church, Calgary.
The celebration commenced with the blessing of noven by Fr Jerald D’Souza, after which children offered flowers to Mother Mary. The congregation then entered the church in procession, singing the traditional hymn 'Sakkad Sangatha Melya'.
The festive Holy Mass was celebrated by Fr Ivan Raymond Monteiro from Abbotsford, BC. In his homily, he emphasized that the birth of Mary brought joy to the world as it prepared the way for the birth of Jesus. He highlighted Mary’s role as both mother and model — who understands family struggles, teaches virtues of service, humility, unity, and prayer, and continues to guide the faithful with the words, “Do whatever He tells you.”

Following Mass, the faithful gathered in the church hall. Noven was distributed after a Konkani prayer led by Fr Alex Braganza. Fr Vijay Martin, associate pastor of St. Mark’s Church, led the Grace before meals, and Fr William Monis, associate pastor of St Luke’s parish, delivered the Monthi Fest message. The children presented a Marian skit on the apparition of Our Lady of Fatima, which added devotional depth to the evening.
The celebration continued with a traditional Mangalorean vegetarian meal, enjoyed in a spirit of fellowship. This was followed by vibrant cultural dances by children and adults, and the event concluded with the lively baila dance, symbolizing unity and joy.
The celebration was marked by deep devotion to Our Lady and a strong sense of community spirit, reflecting the rich tradition of Mangalorean Catholics in Calgary.
