New Delhi, Sep 17: Tragedy struck northwest Delhi on Tuesday night when four sanitation workers fell into a sewer in Ashok Vihar while performing cleaning operations. One worker, identified as 40-year-old Arvind from Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, died on the spot, while three others remain in critical condition.

The incident occurred around 11:30 pm near Harihar Apartments in Ashok Vihar Phase-II. Arvind was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital, where he was declared brought dead, Deputy Commissioner of Police (northwest) Bhisham Singh confirmed. The injured workers – Sonu and Narayana, both from Kasganj, and Naresh from Bihar – are admitted in the ICU in a drowsy state.

Police said the men were employed by a construction company carrying out sewer cleaning work in the area for several days. A crime team visited the site immediately, and the company manager has been summoned for questioning.

“Preliminary investigation has led to registration of a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 106(1) for causing death by negligence, 289 for rash or negligent acts endangering human life, 337 for forgery of documents or electronic records, and the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013,” the DCP said.

Authorities continue to probe the incident to determine how safety protocols were breached and whether proper protective measures were in place.
