New Delhi, Sep 20: Principal secretary to the Prime Minister, Dr P K Mishra, on Saturday said India is moving ahead with “courage and confidence” during the current era of Amrit Kaal, and called on the country’s top institutions, including IIMs, to lead the charge in nation-building through capacity development.

Speaking at the second annual convocation of IIM Mumbai, Mishra underscored the significance of the years leading up to 2047 — the centenary of India's independence — as a transformative period. He said the country is poised for deep structural changes, and the youth will be at the centre of this national evolution.

“In the midst of complexities and challenges, India is moving ahead with courage and confidence. Our Prime Minister has articulated a grand vision for 2047. He has urged us all to take the country forward through reform, perform, and transform,” Mishra told the graduating students.

He emphasised the importance of technological progress and digital transformation, noting how technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, augmented reality, blockchain, and big data analytics are reshaping society and governance. “Today, we cannot imagine life without a smartphone or real-time connectivity. But it wasn’t long ago that we lived without them. This pace of change is unprecedented,” he said.

Calling capacity building the cornerstone of development, Mishra highlighted the role of institutions like IIMs in nurturing future leaders equipped not just with knowledge but also with ethics. He urged the students to carry forward the spirit of a Karma Yogi, blending professional skill with moral responsibility.

Addressing reporters after the ceremony, he said the process of capacity building leads to lifelong change and that India must continue to blend technological innovation with ethical governance to truly transform.

He also praised the growing trend of Indian professionals returning from abroad to contribute to national development. Citing the example of academic Dr. Balasubramanian, who left a career in the US to engage in capacity-building efforts in India, Mishra said the country is benefiting from a mix of public and private sector talent.

He concluded by reminding the graduates that their role is critical in shaping a developed India by 2047 and that institutions like IIM Mumbai will continue to be instrumental in achieving this vision.
