Imphal, Sep 21: Manipur police have detained two individuals in connection with the ambush on an Assam Rifles convoy that killed two soldiers and injured five others earlier this week. Authorities also recovered a van suspected to have been used in the attack from Mutum Yangbi in Imphal, about 12 km from the incident site. The vehicle has multiple owners, all identified, police said.

The ambush took place on Friday at Nambol Sabal Leikai when terrorists fired at a 407 Tata truck carrying Assam Rifles personnel from Patsoi to Nambol. Naib Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap were killed in action, while the injured were taken to RIMS Imphal for treatment.

Following the attack, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla chaired a high-level meeting to review security arrangements in vulnerable areas, emphasizing coordinated action, enhanced patrolling, and stricter monitoring of highways, transit routes, and border zones.

Manipur has been grappling with ethnic tensions between the Meitei community and Kuki tribes since 2023, resulting in over 260 deaths and nearly 50,000 displaced persons. The ambush underscores ongoing security challenges in the state.
