Singapore, Oct 24: An Indian-origin man, Dilip Kumar Nirmal Kumar, has been charged for illegally setting off fireworks during Diwali celebrations, despite a strict ban on fireworks in Singapore, PTI reported quoting local media.
The incident occurred last week along the open field of Carlisle Road, near Kampong Java Flyover. Under Singapore’s Guns, Explosives and Weapons Control Act 2021, lighting fireworks without permission is a punishable offence.

The case came to light after an eight-second video of the fireworks, shared on Instagram by onlooker Aun Koh, circulated online. Eyewitnesses told Shin Min Daily News that the fireworks display took place around 10:15 pm at a construction site.
Dilip appeared in court via video link on Thursday and is scheduled to reappear on November 20. Under Singapore’s Dangerous Fireworks Act, offenders can face up to two years in jail and fines ranging from $2,000 to $10,000, or both.
Singapore has seen similar cases in the past, including a March 2019 conviction where a man and his son were fined $5,000 for setting off fireworks in Bukit Batok, and another case in April 2024 involving a 40-year-old man fined the same amount.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident as part of ongoing efforts to enforce fireworks regulations.
