Hydrogen sulfide leak at Rawatbhata Heavy Water Plant affects five workers

Daijiworld Media Network - Jaipur

Jaipur, Oct 25: A hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas leak at the Rawatbhata Heavy Water Plant on Saturday left five employees affected, including one departmental worker and four contract staff.

According to plant authorities, the incident occurred while workers were performing field duties. Two employees have been referred to Kota for advanced treatment, while the remaining three are being treated at the Nuclear Power Plant Hospital.

One of the contract workers, Dharmendra Lohar, son of Mohan Lohar from Bhainsrodgarh, is in critical condition and has been transferred to Kota Hospital. Another affected individual, a soldier posted at Tower No. 11, reportedly suffered eye irritation and swelling due to the gas exposure.

The situation is reportedly under control, though the exact cause of the leak is still under investigation.

Officials, including DSP Kamal Prasad Meena, Tehsildar Vivek Garasiya, and PSO Raisal Singh, visited the site immediately after the incident. SDM Kriti Vyas confirmed that the affected workers are receiving treatment.

Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic and flammable gas, capable of causing eye irritation, respiratory distress, nausea, and vomiting even at low concentrations. Prolonged or high-level exposure can lead to unconsciousness or death.

Local residents and plant employees have called for a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible. As of now, the plant administration and district authorities have not issued an official statement.

Investigations remain ongoing.
