Kandhamal, Oct 31: A tragic incident has come to light from Odisha’s Kandhamal district, where a Class 7 student died after accidentally swallowing a notice board pin at school. The boy’s family has accused the school authorities of negligence and delay in medical response, which they claim led to his death.

The incident took place on October 15, when the student, who lived with his maternal uncle, reportedly swallowed a pin during school hours. According to his family, his classmates immediately informed the teachers, but the staff allegedly did not take the matter seriously.

“Had he been taken to the hospital in time, he would have survived,” the student’s father said.

The boy returned home later that day and complained of severe chest pain. He told his grandfather about the incident, after which he was rushed to a local hospital. An X-ray revealed that a pin was lodged in his lungs.

He was later shifted to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar and then to Sishu Bhawan in Cuttack, where doctors managed to remove the pin through surgery. However, his condition worsened, and he slipped into a coma, eventually passing away on October 26 while undergoing treatment.

Following his death, the boy’s father lodged a police complaint, seeking justice. Police have confirmed that they have verified the incident with school authorities and are examining CCTV footage. However, a formal FIR has not yet been registered.

The headmaster of the school has denied allegations of negligence, stating that the truth will emerge after investigation. Meanwhile, the student’s parents have urged the district administration to order a thorough probe into the incident.
