Former TV actress held for gold & cash theft in Posta Market

Kolkata, Oct 31: A former television actress, identified as Rupa Dutta (42), has been arrested in connection with a gold and cash theft that took place in the Posta area of North Kolkata, police said on Friday.

According to officials, Dutta was apprehended on Thursday, leading to the recovery of a major portion of the stolen jewellery. She was produced before the Bankshall Court, which remanded her to police custody till November 7.

Police said the theft occurred on October 15, between 4:15 pm and 4:30 pm, when complainant Dipa Agarwal’s purse was stolen while she was shopping at a store on Adi Banstalla Lane in Posta. The stolen items included a gold mangalsutra (20 grams), a ladies’ gold chain with a Vaishno Devi locket (21 grams), two gold bracelets (13 and 9 grams), and Rs 4,000 in cash.

Following the complaint, police registered a case under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for theft. The detective department launched an investigation, analyzing CCTV footage and acting on credible intelligence to trace the suspect.

“Based on surveillance, the accused was spotted near Nanda Ram Market on Brabourne Road and was arrested by the Watch Section team with the help of lady constables,” a senior police official said.

During a subsequent search of her residence in Kalighat and Gariahat, police recovered one gold mangalsutra, a gold chain with a Vaishno Devi locket, and two bracelets weighing 62.95 grams in total, in the presence of witnesses.

Police sources added that Rupa Dutta is a former television actress who has allegedly been involved in similar theft cases over the past few years. Investigators are now probing her possible connection to other unsolved thefts in and around the Burrabazar area.
