Copper bottles promise detox and glow – But are you sipping on health or hazard?

Mumbai, Nov 2: Copper bottles have found their way into almost every home, kitchen, and influencer reel — hailed as the modern route to ancient wellness. Promising detoxified water, glowing skin, and improved digestion, these shining bottles are being marketed as a fusion of Ayurveda and lifestyle luxury. But health experts caution that the growing “Tamra Jal” trend could turn risky when overdone.

According to Ayurvedic tradition, storing water overnight in a copper vessel helps balance the body’s three doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — while improving digestion, immunity, and metabolism. The practice, known for centuries, is believed to provide a natural antibacterial effect and support skin and liver health.

However, medical experts warn that moderation is key. “Your body needs only a very small amount of copper. Excessive intake can cause toxicity, leading to nausea, abdominal pain, and even liver damage,” said a health specialist.

When water is stored for long hours especially if it’s warm or acidic the metal can leach into the water, increasing copper levels beyond safe limits. Individuals with liver or kidney concerns are particularly vulnerable to these effects.

Nutritionists note that most people already get sufficient copper from daily foods such as lentils, nuts, seeds, seafood, and dark chocolate. “Using copper bottles occasionally, not constantly, is a safer way to enjoy the traditional benefits,” they advised.

Experts suggest following simple guidelines store water overnight for 6–8 hours, drink it in the morning, and then switch to glass or steel for the rest of the day. Avoid acidic liquids like lemon water, and clean the bottle using natural agents such as lemon and salt or tamarind pulp to prevent oxidation.

While copper bottles remain a symbol of both heritage and wellness, the message from health professionals is clear — balance, not excess, is the true ancient wisdom.
