Nainital, Nov 4: President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday emphasized the importance of education as a driving force behind India’s growth, urging students to contribute actively to nation-building and strive toward creating a just and equitable society.
Delivering the keynote address at the 20th convocation of Kumaun University in Nainital, the President said that while a convocation marks the formal completion of academic study, the pursuit of learning should never cease.
“Education should inspire us to serve the nation and society with humility. True learning continues throughout life,” she said, adding that education must strengthen not only skills and moral values but also character — the true foundation of a developed nation.

Highlighting India’s economic and developmental strides, the President encouraged the youth to align their education with the needs of the country and to act as responsible citizens shaping a more inclusive future.
A day earlier, President Murmu participated in an event celebrating 125 years of the Raj Bhavan, Nainital, where she reflected on its historical and democratic significance.
Drawing a parallel between Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi and Raj Bhavans across India, she remarked that the latter symbolize the strength of the federal democratic system in the states. Since the creation of Uttarakhand, she said, the Nainital Raj Bhavan has become a landmark in the state’s journey of progress.
The President underlined the constitutional role of the Governor as the head of state governance, noting that the framers of the Constitution had carefully defined the office’s powers and duties. She stressed that Raj Bhavans are revered institutions, and everyone serving there must embody simplicity, humility, morality, and empathy.
Commending Uttarakhand for its steady progress, President Murmu expressed faith in Governor Lt. General Gurmit Singh (Retd) and his team for continuing to inspire citizens and guide the state on the path of prosperity.
Later, addressing the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly in Dehradun during the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the state’s formation, the President urged policymakers and citizens alike to pursue development while preserving the state’s rich natural heritage.
“Uttarakhand’s true progress lies in harmonizing growth with the protection of nature’s blessings,” she said, concluding her visit with a message of sustainability, inclusivity, and lifelong learning.
