Mumbai, Nov 17: Long queues were seen outside several CNG stations across Mumbai on Sunday morning after a sudden disruption in gas supply brought the city’s transport system under strain. The problem arose after a third-party reportedly damaged a key GAIL gas supply pipeline located inside the RCF compound, severely affecting the flow of gas to Mahanagar Gas Ltd.’s City Gas Station (CGS) in Wadala — a crucial link in the company’s distribution network.

With the Wadala CGS impacted, the supply of CNG to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane has been hit, raising concerns over the availability of autorickshaws, taxis and buses that depend heavily on CNG. The disruption has forced several pumps to halt operations, while the few still functioning witnessed heavy congestion, with serpentine queues spilling out onto main roads. At the MGL station near the BKC Police Station, vehicles lined up all the way till the BKC Metro Station.

Despite the crisis, MGL has assured that domestic piped natural gas (PNG) consumers will continue to receive uninterrupted supply, ensuring households are not affected. Industrial and commercial consumers in the affected regions have been advised to switch to alternate fuels until normal operations resume.

MGL stated that gas supply will return to normal only after GAIL completes repairs to the damaged pipeline and restores full operations at the Wadala station. Restoration work is underway. The company supplies 4.59 million standard cubic meters of gas per day, with Mumbai and nearby regions accounting for nearly 85–90% of its daily volumes.
