Kolkata, Nov 20: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Gyanesh Kumar, expressing serious concerns over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. She described the process as “unplanned,” “chaotic,” and “dangerous,” warning that it could have irreversible consequences for citizens, officials, and the electoral system.
In her letter, Banerjee highlighted gaps in planning, lack of training, unclear documentation requirements, and unrealistic timelines that have burdened Booth Level Officers (BLOs), many of whom are also teachers or frontline workers. She noted that officials are struggling with door-to-door surveys, e-submissions, server failures, and data mismatches, making the exercise structurally unsound.

The Chief Minister urged the CEC to pause the SIR, provide adequate support and training, and reassess the methodology and timelines. She emphasized that decisive intervention is necessary to protect the integrity of the electoral process and maintain public trust in India’s democratic framework.
