Dehradun, Nov 24: India and Nepal are set to hold the 19th edition of their annual bilateral military Exercise Suryakiran from November 25 to December 8 in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand.
The Indian Army stated that the exercise aims to enhance operational synergy in jungle warfare and counter-terrorism operations in mountainous terrain. It also emphasizes the integration of niche technologies to improve interoperability while sharing best practices, reflecting the two countries’ joint commitment to global peace and security and strengthening defence cooperation, camaraderie, and mutual trust.

Exercise Suryakiran is conducted annually, alternating between India and Nepal. In the 18th edition, held from December 31, 2024, to January 13 in Saljhandi, Nepal, the Indian contingent of 334 personnel participated in battalion-level training focused on operational preparedness, aviation, medical drills, and environmental conservation. The exercise helped troops refine combat skills, strengthen coordination, and foster knowledge exchange between the two armies.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that India and Nepal maintain long-standing defence and security cooperation. The two armies share a harmonious relationship based on trust and respect, with India contributing to the modernization of the Nepal Army by providing defence equipment and regular training.
The Indian Army has also been instrumental in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations in Nepal, including support during the 2015 earthquake and the COVID-19 pandemic, underscoring the deep strategic and operational ties between the neighbouring militaries.
