Mumbai, Nov 25: Devotees at a Kali temple in Chembur were left shocked after discovering that the goddess idol had been altered to resemble Mother Mary, prompting police to arrest the temple priest and begin an investigation.
The incident occurred on Saturday at the Kali temple situated inside the Hindu cremation ground at Anik Village. The idol was found dressed in golden robes, adorned with a white-embellished crown, and topped with a prominent golden cross. The deity’s traditionally dark complexion had been painted white, and the idol held a child figure believed to represent baby Jesus.

The backdrop of the shrine had also been changed to a red cloth featuring a large golden cross, with fairy lights and tinsel placed around it, further disturbing worshippers.
Police immediately intervened and restored the idol to its original state in the presence of officers to prevent any unrest. The temple priest was produced before court and remanded to two days of police custody. Officials said he is being questioned to determine the motive behind the alteration and whether others were involved.
A case has been registered under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for hurting religious sentiments and damaging a place of worship. Police assured that strict action will be taken.
Right-wing organisations, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, condemned the incident and demanded that all those involved be identified and prosecuted. They also urged authorities to take strong steps to maintain peace and order in the area.
