Delhi moves to curb air pollution: Cow dung cakes to replace wood at crematoriums

New Delhi, Nov 28: In a bid to combat rising air pollution, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has decided to introduce cow dung cakes as fuel at crematoriums across the city. This initiative, aimed at reducing the toxic emissions caused by traditional wood burning, was approved during a meeting of the Public Health Department.

Rajpal Singh, BJP leader and member of the MCD’s Standing Committee, said, “We have decided to hand over two to three cremation centres to NGOs that specialise in using cow dung. Pollution decreases significantly with this method. We first piloted this approach at Kalkaji crematorium when I was the Standing Committee chairman, and it has been running successfully for the past four to five years.”

The move is part of the MCD’s broader strategy to address Delhi’s air quality issues, particularly during the winter months when pollution levels tend to spike due to increased burning of traditional fuels.
