Media Release
Mangaluru, Nov 29: A group of 11 students from the department of virology and immunology, along with Riya Nair, assistant professor, Srinivas Institute of Allied Health Sciences, participated in a five-day hands-on workshop held at the Manipal Institute of Virology (MIV), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal, from November 4 to 8.
The workshop was designed to provide participants with practical exposure to advanced virology laboratory techniques, reinforce theoretical knowledge, and improve technical competency essential for clinical and research virology.

During the course of the workshop, the students received comprehensive training and gained valuable experience in the following techniques:
1. Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA)
Participants were introduced to the principles and applications of ELISA and performed hands-on experiments to detect viral antigens/antibodies. They learned sample preparation, plate handling, reading results, and interpreting data.
2. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
Students were trained in the fundamentals of PCR, including preparation of master mixes, nucleic acid handling, thermocycling, and analysis of amplified products using gel electrophoresis.
3. Conventional PCR assays
The workshop provided detailed exposure to conventional PCR-based pathogen detection methods. Students practiced amplification and visualization of viral genetic material and understood the importance of controls and result interpretation.
4. Cell culture techniques
Participants gained practical experience in:
Handling and maintaining cell lines
Aseptic techniques
Media preparation
Observation of cytopathic effects (CPE)
This session offered valuable insights into how viruses interact with host cells and how culture systems are used in diagnosis and research.
5. Virological assays
Students were introduced to essential virology assays, including:
Viral quantification methods
Titration techniques
Basic principles of plaque and neutralization assays
