Windhoek, Sep 10: South Africa opener Jordan Hermann made a sensational start to his ODI career by scoring 150 runs against Namibia in the first match of the three-game series, equalling the world record for the highest score on ODI debut.

The 24-year-old reached the landmark in just 126 deliveries, becoming the fastest batter to score 150 runs on ODI debut. However, he could not surpass Matthew Breetzke's record for the fastest 150 on debut. Breetzke had also scored 150 against New Zealand in Lahore on February 10, 2025, reaching the mark in 148 balls.

Hermann and Breetzke are now the only two batters to have scored 150 or more in their first ODI appearance.

Hermann was eventually dismissed by Namibia pacer Ruben Trumpelmann on the fifth delivery of the 42nd over. His innings nevertheless played a key role in South Africa's imposing total, with the opener sharing a 190-run partnership with Tony de Zorzi. De Zorzi contributed 72 off 84 deliveries as South Africa posted 348 in their first innings.

Trumpelmann was Namibia's standout bowler, claiming four wickets, while Gerhard Erasmus and JJ Smit took one wicket each. Namibia bowled with discipline during the powerplay and death overs, but Hermann's dominant middle-overs assault helped South Africa gain control of the contest.

The series is significant for both sides, particularly South Africa as they prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The tournament will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The match also marked the first-ever ODI played on Namibian soil, making it a landmark occasion for the hosts.

Namibia will now face the challenge of chasing a formidable target against a strong South African bowling attack.
