Washington, Dec 1: US President Donald Trump launched a sharp attack on former President Joe Biden and his deputy Kamala Harris on Sunday, accusing them of “screwing the country” by allowing immigrants into the US “unchecked and unvetted.” His remarks came after two West Virginia National Guard members were shot near the White House, allegedly by an Afghan national.
In a strongly worded post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Crooked Joe Biden, Mayorkas, and so-called ‘Border Czar’ Kamala Harris really screwed our Country by letting anyone and everyone come in totally unchecked and unvetted.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) echoed the President’s criticism, calling the attack an outcome of what it termed the Biden administration’s “national self-sabotage.” DHS said the Afghan suspect should never have been allowed into the country and announced an indefinite halt on processing all immigration requests linked to Afghan nationals pending a review of vetting procedures.
Kristi Noem, Secretary at DHS, directly blamed Biden for the tragedy, stating that the suspect’s application to enter the US had been processed under his tenure. “The consequences of the shooting and the death of Sarah are directly on the shoulders of Joe Biden and his administration,” she said.
The shooting took place last Wednesday, just ahead of Thanksgiving. West Virginia National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was killed, while Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, 24, suffered serious injuries. The accused, identified as 29-year-old Lakanwal, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
Before arriving in the US, Lakanwal had served in an Afghan Army “Zero Unit,” a special force that worked closely with American troops. He entered the US in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome following the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and later settled in Bellingham, Washington, with his wife and five children. Emails accessed by the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) indicated that he had been struggling to adapt to life in the country.
With the incident sparking fierce political reactions, immigration policy is once again expected to dominate the national debate ahead of the upcoming election cycle.
