Puttur, Dec 12: Police have taken into custody the accused involved in a daylight theft at an arecanut and forest produce purchase centre located in the commercial complex near Gandhi Park here. The accused had allegedly broken into the shop and stolen Rs 5 la in cash along with a bag containing documents and cheques.
The accused, identified as Muhammad Shahbad (26) and Jamsheed (25), both residents of Mudigere, were earlier arrested by N R Pura police of Chikkamagaluru district in connection with another theft case. During interrogation, the duo reportedly confessed to the Uppinangady theft as well, following which Uppinangady police secured their custody and registered a case.

The incident had occurred on October 27 at the arecanut and forest produce trading centre owned by Vasanth, located in the Shriram Gopal Kamat Commercial Complex near Gandhi Park. On that afternoon, the shop owner had locked the cash drawer and stepped out to use the restroom, leaving the shutter open. On returning, he found the cash drawer broken open and Rs 5 lac missing. A complaint was subsequently filed at Uppinangady police station.
After securing custody of the accused from N R Pura police, a team led by rural police inspector Nagaraju brought them to Uppinangady and conducted a spot inspection before officially registering the case.
