Mass shooting in S Africa’s West Rand leaves nine dead, police launch manhunt

Johannesburg, Dec 21: At least nine people lost their lives and several others were injured after gunmen opened fire in South Africa’s West Rand region, in an attack that has once again highlighted the country’s ongoing struggle with violent crime.

According to police, the shooting occurred at the KwaNoxolo Tavern in the Tambo area of Bekkersdal, a township near Johannesburg. Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the assailants not only targeted people inside the tavern but also fired randomly at individuals on nearby streets, increasing the death toll.

Gauteng Acting Police Commissioner Fred Kekana confirmed that a large-scale investigation is underway. Law enforcement agencies have deployed multiple specialised units, including crime scene experts, serious crime investigators, crime intelligence teams, and detectives, to piece together what happened and identify those responsible.

“We are still in the process of collecting statements and analysing evidence,” Kekana told local media, adding that national and provincial teams are working together at the scene.

So far, police have not established a motive for the attack, and no arrests have been made. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as investigations continue.

The incident is the latest in a string of deadly shootings in South Africa. Earlier this month, 12 people — including a three-year-old child — were killed when gunmen opened fire at a hostel in Pretoria that was allegedly functioning as an illegal alcohol outlet.

With two mass shootings reported in December alone, concerns are growing over public safety in crime-affected communities, as police face mounting pressure to curb gun violence and bring perpetrators to justice.
