Indian Railways becomes world’s largest electrified rail network, boosts green energy push

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 7: Indian Railways has achieved a historic milestone, emerging as one of the most extensively electrified rail systems globally. Nearly all of the country’s 70,000 route-kilometre broad-gauge network is now powered by electricity, with over 99 percent electrification completed by November 2025.

The pace of electrification has accelerated dramatically over the years. Between 2004 and 2014, only 1.5 kilometres per day were electrified on average. In the last six years, this has jumped to over 15 kilometres per day, reflecting the railways’ push for faster and greener transport.

Alongside electrification, Indian Railways has also made significant strides in renewable energy adoption. The network’s solar power capacity has surged to nearly 900 megawatts as of November 2025, up from just under 4 megawatts in 2014, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.

Officials highlight that these initiatives will not only cut dependence on fossil fuels but also lower operational costs while contributing to India’s broader climate goals. With this achievement, Indian Railways sets a global benchmark in eco-friendly and efficient railway operations.
