Experts reveal 3 hidden health causes behind dull skin: Gut, nutrients, and heavy metals

Mumbai, Jan 31: Many people spend heavily on high-end skincare products, hoping to achieve radiant, even-toned skin. Yet, despite elaborate routines and costly cosmetics, results often fall short, leaving skin looking uneven, lifeless, or dull. Experts now say that true skin health goes far beyond topical care and is deeply linked to internal body health.

Celebrity nutritionist Anjali Mukerjee recently highlighted on Instagram that three key internal factors—poor gut health, micronutrient deficiencies, and heavy metal toxicity—are often behind persistent dull skin, even among regular users of premium skincare products.

1. Gut health:

Mukerjee emphasizes the strong connection between gut and skin health. “No amount of expensive cosmetics can mask the effects of poor gut health,” she explains. Signs of an unhealthy gut include bloating, constipation, body odour, frequent antibiotic use, excessive antacid consumption, irregular sleep, and high alcohol intake. These factors can cause gut dysbiosis, an imbalance of gut flora, which often shows up as dull, unhealthy-looking skin.

2. Micronutrient deficiencies:

“Healthy skin needs the right internal building blocks,” Mukerjee says. Key nutrients include vitamin D, iron, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids. Iron supports oxygen delivery to tissues, zinc aids skin regeneration and inflammation control, omega-3 fatty acids strengthen the skin barrier, and vitamin D helps modulate the immune system. Without sufficient levels of these nutrients, skin cannot achieve its natural glow, regardless of external skincare.

3. Heavy metal toxicity:

Mukerjee also points out that heavy metals can block nutrient absorption, preventing the body from using essential micronutrients. Sources include contaminated food, water, certain utensils, and environmental exposure. Detoxifying under professional guidance and reducing heavy metal load can help restore nutritional balance and improve skin health.

Instead of relying solely on expensive skincare, Mukerjee advises focusing on internal health, balanced nutrition, and lifestyle changes to achieve a natural glow—often more effectively and cost-efficiently than topical products alone.
