Mumbai incest case: Father held after DNA match among 17 suspects

Mumbai, Feb 5: In a shocking case of sexual abuse from south Mumbai’s Cuffe Parade area, police have arrested a man for allegedly raping his 20-year-old daughter, who is hearing- and speech-impaired, after DNA analysis confirmed that he is the biological father of the foetus she was carrying.

Police said DNA samples collected from 17 suspects were matched with the foetal DNA, and only the father’s profile tested positive.

The case came to light in September last year when the victim complained of abdominal discomfort to her grandmother using hand gestures. She was later admitted to Cama and Albless Hospital, where doctors found that she was around five months pregnant. The hospital authorities immediately informed the police.

Investigators initially faced challenges in recording the victim’s statement due to communication barriers and her unwillingness to speak. During questioning, the father reportedly denied any sexual assault and failed to explain the pregnancy. He also refused to file a complaint.

After counselling, the woman agreed to lodge a formal complaint. Based on the information provided, police arrested another man and detained a 17-year-old boy, both of whom were identified by the victim as having sexually assaulted her. DNA and blood samples were then collected from 17 individuals, including the father.

The DNA report, received on January 27, confirmed the father’s involvement. Police said the alleged sexual assault took place between March and September 21 last year. A case was registered on September 22, and further investigation is underway to determine the role of other accused.

Police officials said stringent action will be taken against all those found guilty in the case.
