Washington, Feb 7: The United States on Friday accused China of conducting secret nuclear explosive tests and preparing for additional high-yield detonations, in violation of international test ban commitments.
Thomas DiNanno, U.S. under secretary of state for arms control, told the UN Conference on Disarmament that China had conducted nuclear tests and attempted to conceal them. “The People’s Liberation Army sought to conceal testing by obfuscating the nuclear explosions because it recognised these tests violate test ban commitments,” he said, adding that China used “decoupling — a method to decrease the effectiveness of seismic monitoring — to hide their activities from the world.”

The revelations provide more detail than previous hints by President Donald Trump, who in October 2025 said Washington might resume nuclear testing “on an equal basis” with Moscow and Beijing without specifying the nature of the tests.
DiNanno’s announcement coincided with the U.S. unveiling a new plan proposing three-way talks with Russia and China to set fresh nuclear limits following the expiration of the New START treaty between Washington and Moscow. China has already declined to join disarmament talks “at this stage.”
