Jagdalpur, Feb 7: President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday inaugurated Bastar Pandum 2026, a three-day celebration of tribal culture and tradition, at Chhattisgarh’s Jagdalpur, marking what she described as Bastar’s inspiring journey from years of Maoist violence to peace, confidence, and development.

Held at the historic Lalbagh Ground, the festival brings together vibrant displays of indigenous art, rituals, music, and community life, reflecting the deep-rooted cultural legacy of Bastar’s tribal society.

Addressing the gathering, President Murmu described “Pandum” not merely as a festival, but as a way of life embedded in the rhythms of nature and daily existence. “When seeds are sown in the fields, it is Pandum. When mangoes ripen, it is Pandum. Every moment of life here is celebrated,” she said, adding that the rest of the country could learn from Bastar’s joyful and harmonious relationship with nature.

While acknowledging the region’s cultural richness, the President also reflected on the painful impact of nearly four decades of Maoist insurgency. She noted that an atmosphere of fear, insecurity, and distrust had caused immense suffering to tribal communities, youth, and marginalised sections.

She credited sustained and firm action by the Union government for weakening Maoist influence, allowing many former extremists to renounce violence and rejoin the mainstream. Highlighting the rising number of surrenders in Chhattisgarh, she said the government is committed to ensuring rehabilitated individuals live dignified lives through targeted welfare and support programmes.

President Murmu lauded the Chhattisgarh government’s Niyad Nellanar Yojana, pointing to visible transformation across interior villages. She cited the spread of electricity, roads, and drinking water facilities, the reopening of long-shuttered schools, and the return of children to classrooms as clear signs of renewal.

“This emerging picture is deeply heartening and a source of happiness for the entire nation,” she said.

Commending those who have chosen peace over violence, the President urged them to repose full faith in the Constitution and democratic values, work with sincerity, and remain vigilant against any forces seeking to push them back into conflict.

She reiterated the Union government’s focus on uplifting the poorest and most marginalised communities through initiatives such as PM-JANMAN Yojana and Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, which aim to deliver development directly to remote tribal regions.

Education featured prominently in her address. Describing it as the cornerstone of both personal and societal progress, she highlighted the role of Eklavya Model Residential Schools in expanding quality education in tribal areas. She appealed to parents and guardians to make education a priority, saying it would shape a brighter future for Chhattisgarh and the country.

The President also paid tribute to Bastar’s enduring traditions, referencing the world-famous Bastar Dussehra, dedicated to Goddess Danteshwari, as a powerful symbol of tribal unity and cultural pride. She called for a balanced approach that embraces development while safeguarding heritage.

Citing Bastar’s rich natural resources and the industrious spirit of its people—especially the youth—President Murmu encouraged them to fully utilise Central and state welfare schemes to drive personal growth and regional progress, contributing to the vision of a Viksit Bharat.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Chhattisgarh governor Ramen Deka, chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai, and several other dignitaries.
