Erode, Feb 25: A 55-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Thalavadi Hills on Tuesday night, sparking protests by villagers who blocked the road demanding swift action from the Forest Department.
The deceased has been identified as Muthammal, wife of Ramasamy, a resident of Bangala Thotti village under the Germalam forest range of the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve.

According to local sources, the incident occurred when the woman was in the vicinity of the forest area. She sustained severe injuries in the elephant attack and died on the spot.
The tragic incident triggered anger among villagers, who staged a road blockade seeking measures to prevent frequent human-wildlife conflicts in the region. They demanded enhanced patrolling, early warning systems and adequate compensation for the bereaved family.
Forest officials rushed to the spot and initiated an inquiry into the incident. Efforts are underway to monitor elephant movement in the area to prevent further mishaps.
