New Delhi, Mar 1: India has continued to hold its position as the world’s largest milk producer, contributing nearly 25 per cent of the global output, the government said.

Over the past decade, the dairy sector has recorded a compound annual growth rate of around six per cent. Milk production has risen from 146 million tonnes in 2014-15 to over 247 million tonnes in 2024-25, marking a growth of more than 69.4 per cent.

The sustained increase in production has significantly improved nutritional access across the country. Per capita milk availability reached 485 grams per day in 2024-25, well above the global average of 328 grams.

The government stated that India’s agricultural progress is being increasingly driven by the rapid expansion of allied sectors, including livestock, dairy, poultry and fisheries. These segments have emerged as major contributors to agricultural Gross Value Added while also generating substantial rural employment.
