Trump warns Iran football team over safety ahead of World Cup

Washington, Mar 13: Donald Trump has warned that members of Iran national football team could face risks to their “life and safety” if they participate in the upcoming FIFA World Cup to be hosted in North America.

Trump made the remarks on his Truth Social platform, saying that although the Iranian team would be allowed to take part, their safety could be at risk amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

“The Iran National Soccer Team is welcome to the World Cup, but I really don't believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety,” he said.

The war, triggered by US-Israeli strikes on February 28, has raised uncertainty over Iran’s participation in the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico.

Earlier this week, Gianni Infantino, president of world football’s governing body FIFA, said he had discussed the situation in Iran during a meeting with Trump at the White House.

Infantino said Trump had reiterated that the Iranian team would be welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States.

The FIFA chief also recently created a FIFA peace prize and awarded it to Trump in December.

Trump also commented on a separate issue involving Iranian women footballers who were visiting Australia for an Asian Cup match. The players had feared possible retaliation back home after they reportedly did not sing the national anthem before a match.

Following the development, Australia agreed to grant asylum to five players who chose to remain in the country.
