7 killed, 5 injured in avalanche on Srinagar-Leh highway

Srinagar, Mar 27: At least seven people were killed and five others injured after multiple avalanches struck the Srinagar-Leh National Highway on Friday, officials said.

The avalanches hit the stretch between Zero Point and Minimarg near Zojila Pass in the afternoon, trapping several vehicles under heavy snow.

Rescue teams were immediately rushed to the spot, and operations are underway to clear the debris and locate those trapped, officials added.

Union minister Jitendra Singh expressed grief over the incident, confirming the fatalities.

“Saddened to learn about the tragic death of 7 persons and injuries to 5 after avalanche hit the vehicle at Zojila pass. My sincere condolences to the bereaved families,” he said in a post on X.

He added that all necessary assistance is being extended to the injured.
