Patna, Apr 2: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to take oath as a Rajya Sabha member on April 10, sources said, in a move that could trigger a major political transition in the state.
According to sources, Kumar will travel to New Delhi on April 9 and is likely to stay for a few days, during which he may hold meetings with senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He is expected to resign as Chief Minister soon after returning to Patna, possibly after April 12, paving the way for the formation of a new government in Bihar.
Kumar’s shift to the Rajya Sabha has intensified speculation over his successor, especially coming just months after securing a fresh mandate in the Assembly elections. While constitutional provisions allow a non-legislator to continue as Chief Minister for up to six months, sources indicate he is unlikely to remain in office for that duration.
A leadership change is expected after the Kharmaas period ends on April 14, with the BJP — a long-time ally in the ruling coalition — reportedly keen to stake claim to the top post.
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary is being seen as a frontrunner, while Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai is also in contention.
Meanwhile, the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) is expected to negotiate a significant share in the new cabinet, with discussions also underway regarding a possible role for Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar.
The Bihar Home Department has confirmed that Nitish Kumar will continue to receive ‘Z Plus’ security cover even after stepping down as Chief Minister. The decision follows a security review under the Bihar Special Security Act, 2000.
Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16 and resigned from the Bihar Legislative Council on March 30, signalling the beginning of a significant political shift in the state.
