Mumbai, Apr 3: Three personnel of the Government Railway Police (GRP) have been dismissed from service following a departmental inquiry into allegations of assault and extortion involving a jeweller at Mumbai Central Terminus last year.

The dismissal order, issued on March 30, named assistant sub-inspector Lalit Jagtap and constables Rahul Bhosle and Anil Rathod, all attached to the Mumbai Central GRP chowky. The trio was found guilty of harassing the jeweller despite him providing a valid explanation for the valuables he was carrying.

The incident occurred on August 10, 2025, when the jeweller, accompanied by his eight-year-old daughter and brother-in-law, was preparing to board the Duronto Express to return to Rajasthan after attending a jewellery exhibition and visiting family for Raksha Bandhan.

According to the complaint, the GRP personnel stopped the family for a baggage check and found a 14-gram gold biscuit and Rs 31,000 in cash. Despite explanations, the jeweller was allegedly taken to a room outside the station premises, where he was abused, slapped in front of his minor daughter, and threatened with legal action.

The accused officers allegedly forced him to sign blank papers and took most of his cash, returning only Rs 1,900 minutes before his train’s departure.

The traumatised jeweller later filed a complaint in Rajasthan, which was transferred to Mumbai and probed by the Railway Crime Branch.

Activist Sameer Zaveri said the swift departmental action sends a strong message that corruption and extortion within the force will not be tolerated.
