CBSE clarifies QR codes on question papers, warns against misinformation

New Delhi, Apr 3: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a clarification to address confusion surrounding QR codes printed on its examination question papers, stating that they are not meant to function as clickable or scannable web links.

The board explained that the QR codes are used strictly for internal administrative purposes such as authentication, tracking, and maintaining examination integrity. “These codes do not open as web links when scanned and only display intended text,” CBSE said, dismissing claims that they lead to external websites or hidden content.

CBSE noted that confusion has arisen when users manually search QR-related text online, leading to unrelated results generated by search engine algorithms. “Such results are algorithm-driven and have no connection with CBSE or its examination processes,” the board clarified.

Raising concerns over misinformation, Controller of Examinations Sanyam Bhardwaj termed the linking of QR codes to unrelated individuals or content as “factually incorrect and misleading.”

The board urged students, parents, teachers, and media organisations to verify information through official channels and avoid sharing unverified claims that could damage institutional credibility.

In a related advisory, CBSE also cautioned teachers involved in Class X and XII evaluations against posting misleading content on social media, warning that such actions could create confusion and spread rumours among students.
