Mumbai, Apr 3: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed its water engineering officials to prioritise and swiftly resolve complaints related to contaminated water supply, amid rising concerns from various parts of the city.

The directive was issued by Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar during a review meeting, where officials were instructed to ensure time-bound redressal and strengthen on-ground monitoring systems.

While the civic body has maintained that potable water is supplied across Mumbai, it acknowledged recent complaints of contamination, low pressure, and irregular supply in certain areas. Authorities stressed that cases involving contaminated water must be treated with utmost urgency due to potential public health risks.

To tackle leakages, the BMC has ordered immediate deployment of teams to identify and repair faults in the distribution network. Officials have also been asked to conduct field inspections in areas facing low pressure or inadequate supply and implement corrective measures without delay.

Adopting a zero-tolerance approach, the civic body has directed officials to trace sources of contamination promptly and initiate round-the-clock corrective work. Special zone-wise teams will be formed for rapid response, with additional manpower deployed where required.

The BMC also emphasised improved coordination among its departments to prevent delays, warning that negligence would invite strict action.

Concerns were also raised over infrastructure projects damaging underground pipelines, with instructions issued for immediate repairs and better monitoring.

The measures come as Mumbai faces rising water demand due to summer conditions and prepares for the upcoming monsoon season, with authorities aiming to ensure safe and uninterrupted water supply across the city.
