New Jersey, Aug 16: A 63-year-old New Jersey man has surrendered to authorities and been charged in connection with a boat crash that killed two children, aged seven and nine, last month, police said.

Stephen Schneider of Bayville was arrested Friday and faces two counts of second-degree reckless vessel homicide, along with one count each of operating a vessel under the influence and reckless operation of a vessel, according to the New Jersey State Police.

The incident occurred on July 19 at around 9.09 pm when a 30-foot Tidewater Custom 280 vessel struck a channel marker in the Intracoastal Waterway, throwing a nine-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy into the water.

The children died following the incident, police said.

Schneider surrendered to authorities Friday in connection with the case. The circumstances surrounding the crash and the events leading up to the children's deaths remain under investigation.

The New Jersey State Police said the investigation is ongoing.

Online court records did not show the case as of Saturday, and it was not immediately clear whether Schneider had retained an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
