New Delhi, Apr 6: A remark by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge referring to “illiterate Gujaratis” during a public meeting in Idukki has triggered a major political controversy, with the BJP accusing him of insulting the people of Gujarat.
Addressing a gathering ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Kerala, Kharge urged voters to support the Congress-led UDF alliance, stating that people in the state are educated and cannot be misled. “You may be able to fool illiterate people in Gujarat and elsewhere, but not the people of Kerala,” he said.
The statement drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders, with Bhupendra Patel condemning the remark as “objectionable and unfortunate.” He said the comment disrespected the six crore people of Gujarat and tarnished the legacy of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Patel also alleged that the Congress was uncomfortable with the growing support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and that such statements reflected the party’s “narrow-minded thinking.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi criticised Kharge’s comment, alleging it reflected deep-seated hostility towards the people of Gujarat.
The controversy has intensified political tensions ahead of key elections, with both parties trading sharp remarks over the issue.
