Mumbai, Apr 17: Around 900 teachers staged protests across the city on Thursday, highlighting multiple grievances against the education department over long-pending issues.
Demonstrations were held outside the offices of education inspectors, with teachers voicing concern over halted salaries, particularly affecting surplus teachers from government and aided schools. Many have been left without postings after several institutions shut down due to low student enrolment, impacting their livelihoods.

The protesting teachers, affiliated with the Shikshak Sena, demanded strict disciplinary action against the education secretary, holding the administration responsible for the ongoing crisis.
They also raised issues such as pending arrears, additional duties as booth-level officers, and the burden of conducting student headcounts during examination periods.
“The teachers have been forced to bear the brunt of the laxity of the education department, which is why this protest took place. We were here to express our anger against an administration that has disregarded numerous issues within the education department. Our leader JM Abhyankar has also conveyed our demands to the education secretary,” said Hitendra Chaudhari, district president of Maharashtra Rajya Shikshak Sena.
