Kasargod: Statewide Protest Against Proposed Kochi-M'lore Gas Pipeline

Kasargod, Mar 10: “A widespread protest will be held against the Kochi–Mangalore gas pipe line proposed by the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL),” said former minister Cherkalam Abdulla.

Addressing the gas pipeline victims meet held at municipal auditorium here on Friday March 9, Abdulla said that both union and state governments will be pressurized against the proposed gas pipeline that will pass through inhabited areas and farmlands. He cautioned the governments not to cause distress to the common man for the interests of private companies.

Kasargod MLA N A Nellikunnu presided over the meet here on Friday. Manjeshwar MLA P B Abdul Razak raised slogans against the proposed laying of a gas pipeline in the district.

UDF convener P Gangadharan Nair said that a delegation of victims will meet both state and union ministers in order convince them to shelve the proposed plans.

The people’s representatives Harshad Varkady, Moosa B Cherkala, Mamata Divakar, Shamsad Shukur, Ali Master, Nazma A Khader, victims committee office-bearers Robert D’Souza, Dr I K Bhat, Divakar S J, Ummer Borkala, Hameed Rehmania, Vittal Shetty, and M K Peruvad were present on the occasion.

    Protest in Kerala thier birth right. Extending Mangalore bound train to Kerala no problem. But Pipe line passing from Kerala soil to Mangalore port no no.

    The problem is the government is not giving compensation to the land losers adequately.

    Adding to it... once the pipeline is put in a property, the market value of property goes down like anything as the land cannot be used for any construction works. More over there is chance of gas leak. There should be solutions for these issues and mitigation plan for the risks.

    How will the country progress without new schemes coming up? Road widening, rilway line, dams, canals, pipeline laying, all need place. It will be impossible to undertake any such plans without disturbing the nature or the people. It will be best if the least number of people are disturbed, very little damage done to nature. It is also to be compulsorily suitably compensated to the aggrieved persons, rebuild the environment if any damage caused. But progress must go on.
