Washington, May 1: US President Donald Trump will step out of the White House for the first time since a recent foiled assassination attempt, travelling to Florida on Friday amid heightened security concerns and growing political pressure.
Trump is scheduled to visit The Villages, a large retirement community known for backing Republican candidates, where he is expected to highlight new tax deductions for senior citizens and improvements in accessibility at the Social Security Administration.
The visit comes at a time when Trump’s approval ratings have dropped to new lows during his second term, with Republican candidates also facing challenges ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, more than 60 per cent of voters disapprove of his performance, while his approval rating stands at 34 per cent—matching the lowest level seen at the end of his first term.

Economic concerns continue to weigh on the administration, with rising fuel prices and increasing inflation. The average gasoline price in the United States has climbed to its highest level in nearly four years, while inflation in March recorded its fastest growth in three years, according to official data.
Economist Michael Strain noted that while the president is not solely responsible for affordability concerns, there is criticism that the administration has not effectively addressed voter anxieties through policy measures.
The latest poll was conducted largely before the recent security scare, where an armed individual allegedly attempted to storm a gathering attended by Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other senior officials. The suspect was intercepted by security personnel before reaching the venue.
Trump described the incident as evidence of his impact in office, stating that his policies have drawn strong reactions. This marks the third such threat in less than two years.
Security arrangements are expected to be under close scrutiny during his Florida trip. Following his address at The Villages, Trump will travel to Palm Beach to meet civic and business leaders before attending the PGA Cadillac Championship at the Trump National Doral golf resort near Miami.
Despite the recent threats, Trump said he continues to have confidence in the Secret Service and dismissed the idea of using additional personal protection such as a bulletproof vest, joking about its appearance.
