New Delhi, May 10: Medical experts have stressed the importance of proper postpartum care, stating that the period following childbirth is crucial for a mother’s physical and emotional recovery and should receive as much attention as pregnancy itself.
Childbirth marks the beginning of motherhood, but the postpartum phase often brings several physical, hormonal and emotional changes that frequently go unnoticed. Experts noted that during the first few weeks and months after delivery, attention is usually focused more on the newborn while the mother’s health concerns are overlooked.
According to health experts, women experience significant hormonal, metabolic and emotional changes during pregnancy and after childbirth. While certain discomforts are common, persistent symptoms should not be ignored.

Symptoms such as constant fatigue, mood swings, disturbed sleep, excessive hair fall, weakness, urinary leakage, body pain and sudden weight changes may indicate underlying health conditions including thyroid imbalance, anaemia, vitamin deficiencies or Postpartum Depression.
Doctors pointed out that many women hesitate to discuss such issues, believing that tiredness and emotional fluctuations are a normal part of motherhood. This often leads to delayed diagnosis and treatment, affecting recovery, quality of life and the ability to care for the baby.
Experts also highlighted the need to prioritise mental health among new mothers. Feelings of sadness, anxiety, irritability and emotional numbness are common during the postpartum period and should not be neglected.
Healthcare professionals said emotional support from family members and timely medical guidance can significantly help mothers cope with physical and emotional recovery during this phase.
They further emphasised that postpartum care is not limited to rest alone. A balanced diet rich in iron, calcium and protein, adequate fluid intake, proper sleep, gentle exercise and regular medical check-ups are essential for faster recovery.
According to experts, small lifestyle changes combined with emotional support can help mothers regain strength and confidence after childbirth.
Doctors also stressed that a mother’s health forms the foundation of family well-being and encouraged women to seek medical attention for any unusual physical or emotional symptoms without hesitation.
