Washington, May 13: US President Donald Trump has said that a potential settlement between Russia and Ukraine is “getting very close,” expressing renewed optimism that the prolonged conflict could be approaching a resolution after months of global diplomatic efforts.
Speaking to reporters before departing aboard Marine One, Trump said negotiations appeared to be making progress, although he did not point to any specific breakthrough or outline the details of ongoing discussions.
He reiterated his belief that the end of the war in Ukraine was nearing, stating that efforts to broker peace between Moscow and Kyiv were advancing. He also indicated confidence that a final agreement could eventually be reached, while stressing that the United States would do “whatever’s necessary” to support the process.

During the interaction, Trump also dismissed reports suggesting any prior understanding with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding territorial arrangements in eastern Ukraine, including the Donbas region, firmly denying such claims.
The US President made the remarks while discussing broader foreign policy priorities ahead of his expected meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, noting that global conflicts, including the war in Ukraine, would likely be part of the agenda.
Trump also linked the prospect of peace to wider economic implications, suggesting that an end to the conflict could help ease global energy pressures and reduce oil prices, which he said would have a positive impact on inflation and markets.
His comments come as international efforts continue to push for negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, more than four years after the war began and caused widespread destruction along with disruptions to global food, energy, and security systems.
The situation has also drawn global attention to shifting geopolitical alignments, with countries such as India balancing energy imports from Russia alongside expanding strategic and economic cooperation with Western nations.
