Washington, May 17: The latest data released by the American Automobile Association showed that the national average price of regular gasoline in the United States stood at 4.513 US dollars per gallon as of May 17, 2026.
After witnessing a brief decline earlier in the week, fuel prices across the country have largely remained stable, with only marginal increases reported in some states.
Despite limited day-to-day fluctuations, significant regional differences in fuel prices continue to persist. West Coast states and non-contiguous regions remain the costliest markets for motorists, while several states in the South and Midwest continue to report comparatively lower fuel prices.

Analysts attribute the uneven pricing trend to multiple factors, including supply chain conditions, refinery utilisation, fuel taxation policies and stricter environmental fuel standards in certain states.
California continues to record the highest gasoline prices in the country.
According to the latest figures, regular gasoline in California was priced at 6.143 US dollars per gallon, while midgrade fuel stood at 6.381 dollars per gallon. Premium gasoline was priced at 6.567 dollars per gallon, and diesel rates reached 7.421 dollars per gallon.
Fuel prices in the United States have remained under pressure amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and concerns over global energy supply disruptions.
