Mangaluru, May 21: In a tragic incident, a 65-year-old man lost his life after being buried under a mudslide while measuring land for the construction of a compound wall at Lohith Nagar near Kuntikana on Thursday, May 21.

The deceased has been identified as Antony Mascarenhas, a resident of Urwa Ashok Nagar. Despite a rescue operation conducted by personnel from the Kadri fire station who rushed to the spot, his life could not be saved.

The incident occurred at around 10 am. Antony, who had taken the centering contract for the construction of the retaining wall, was inspecting and measuring the site along with four other workers when the earth suddenly caved in, trapping him underneath the debris.

He was pulled out of the mud and immediately rushed to a hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries as the treatment proved ineffective.

It is gathered that a house is situated on the upper level of the slope, and the mud had caved in during last year's monsoon. Consequently, the construction of a retaining wall had been initiated to prevent further landslides.

The Lohit nagar Developer should have done the job professionally. Slopes should have been levelled before the foundation. I live very next to /Adjacent to Lohit Nagar. The field and forest region is bought about 35byears ago by the Developer one named Lohit builders/ company. The builder did not deliver what legally to be delivered to the purchasers of the Units/ bungalows. The buyers have had thereafter formed/ Regd. housing Society. The Society may be not be very active looks like. We all neighbours deeply regret the sad demise of Anthony Mascarenhas of Ashoknagar, Kottara, Urvastore. Let his Good spirit/ aatma Rest In Peace.

This is a warning bell for all residents of hilly, artificially made sites in DK; this region is filled with many such high risk spots susceptible to landslides, because of unscientific hill cutting & landfills making place for artificial land sites to build houses & homestays, without bothering to build commensurate reinforced concrete retainer walls etc to prevent landslides especially during the monsoon season! Reminded of the 2024 Wayanad landslides!! 😞
