Mangaluru, May 22: In a striking incident off the Mangaluru coast in the Arabian Sea, fishermen accidentally netted a rare cat shark and later released it back into the sea, with a dramatic rescue video of the operation now going viral on social media.

During routine deep-sea fishing operations, the unusual and large fish was found trapped in the nets. On closer inspection, fishermen were surprised by its distinct appearance and identified it as a rare species. Rather than killing it or sending it for sale, they carefully extricated the fish from the net and, using a crane, gently lowered it back into the sea.

The moment the fish swam away safely has since been widely shared online, drawing curiosity and appreciation.

Fishing community leaders in Mangaluru have clarified that the incident may not have taken place at the Mangaluru jetty itself, but possibly at sea involving fishermen from Tamil Nadu, according to media reports.

The cat shark is regarded as a rare species and is not usually consumed, which influenced the decision to release it back into its natural habitat. While viral posts claimed the fish weighed around 600 kg, local fishermen estimated its weight to be closer to 150–200 kg based on visual assessment.

Described as reddish in colour with cat-like eyes and striped patterns resembling a cat’s body, the species is known for its distinctive appearance and size, which is believed to be the reason behind the name “cat shark”.
