Los Angeles, May 24: Authorities have confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to the US state of Hawaii after a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck near the Big Island on Friday evening.

The quake occurred about 12 km south of Honaunau-Napoopoo at 9:46 p.m. local time, according to the United States Geological Survey. The epicentre was located at a depth of 22.4 km.

The USGS said the earthquake was widely felt across the Hawaiian Islands but reported no immediate damage or disruption. It also noted that there were no apparent impacts on nearby volcanoes such as Mauna Loa or Kilauea.

Several minor aftershocks have been recorded following the main quake, and officials warned that more could occur in the coming days.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake. Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda also stated that the magnitude was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat for the island.

Seismic activity is relatively common in Hawaii, with dozens of earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or higher recorded within a 100-km radius of the region over the past 50 years.

In the United States, tsunami alerts are categorised into four levels—information statement, watch, advisory and warning—depending on the severity and potential impact of seismic events. Officials reiterated that residents should always stay informed but confirmed that no immediate evacuation or coastal threat was required in this case.
