Washington, May 24: A gunman was shot dead by US Secret Service personnel after opening fire near the White House on Saturday evening in a sudden security incident that briefly locked down the executive complex.
Officials said the shooting occurred shortly after 6 p.m. near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, close to the White House grounds and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
According to the United States Secret Service, the suspect pulled out a weapon from a bag and began firing, prompting officers to return fire and neutralise him at the scene. He was later taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities confirmed that one bystander was also struck by gunfire and was hospitalised. The condition of the injured civilian has not been officially released, though media reports indicated they were in critical condition. No Secret Service personnel were injured during the exchange.
The White House confirmed that President Donald Trump was inside the building at the time of the incident and was not harmed. Officials added that no protectees or operations were affected.
The area around the White House was immediately placed under lockdown, with security forces sweeping the grounds as journalists and staff were rushed into secure areas. Witnesses reported hearing multiple rounds of gunfire, with some describing the sound as continuous bursts lasting several seconds.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency was assisting in the investigation alongside other law enforcement bodies, including the Metropolitan Police Department.
The identity and motive of the suspect have not yet been released, and officials said the investigation remains ongoing. Additional details are expected as authorities continue to review evidence and gather witness accounts.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in Washington, following other recent disruptions near major federal events in the capital.
