Mangaluru, May 26: While temple donations are often associated with the maintenance and development of religious institutions, a temple in Dakshina Kannada has quietly been scripting a remarkable story of compassion, social responsibility and human dignity for over a decade.

At the centre of this inspiring initiative is Mohan Das Surathkal, trustee of the Sri Mahamayi Durga Parameshwari Temple in Ulepady, Balkunje, who has transformed devotees’ offerings into a powerful force for social change. For the past 13 years, he has ensured that the temple’s donations are not used for personal gain but are dedicated to uplifting some of society’s most vulnerable communities.

Guided by the belief that wealth offered to God should ultimately benefit humanity, Mohan Das has been spearheading a unique social welfare programme since 2013. Through this initiative, the temple has successfully conducted free mass marriages for more than 300 couples, primarily belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities.

From wedding arrangements and rituals to essential support for newlyweds, the entire expense is borne by the temple, helping families who would otherwise struggle to meet the financial burden of marriage.

This year, the tradition continued as three more couples exchanged wedding vows in a simple yet meaningful ceremony held on the temple premises amid blessings from devotees, community leaders and well-wishers.

For Mohan Das, religion is not confined to rituals and ceremonies. Instead, he believes that true devotion lies in serving humanity and extending a helping hand to those in need.

“Temple donations should become a source of hope for the needy” is a philosophy reflected in every initiative undertaken by the temple. Over the years, countless families have found relief and dignity through the programme, which has become a symbol of community welfare and social harmony.

Mohan Das’s commitment to public service is rooted in the values passed down by his father, a freedom fighter and firm believer in Gandhian principles. Inspired by this legacy, he has dedicated himself to promoting equality, inclusiveness and social upliftment.

As a tribute to these ideals, a large portrait of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled during this year’s mass marriage programme, highlighting the enduring relevance of Gandhi’s message of service, simplicity and compassion.

In an era where stories of selfless service often go unnoticed, the work being carried out at the Sri Mahamayi Durga Parameshwari Temple stands as a shining example of how religious institutions can become instruments of social transformation.

By converting faith into action and donations into opportunities, Mohan Das Surathkal has helped hundreds of couples begin their new lives with dignity and hope. His efforts have not only eased financial burdens but have also strengthened the message that humanity, equality and service are the highest forms of worship.

As the temple continues its mission of giving back to society, its story serves as a powerful reminder that true devotion is measured not by what is offered at the altar, but by how it changes lives beyond it.
