Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 3: The post-mortem examination of a one-and-a-half-year-old boy allegedly beaten to death by his mother's live-in partner in Kerala has revealed 91 injuries on his body, exposing what investigators describe as prolonged and brutal abuse.

The victim, Arshid, died in Panavoor near Nedumangad in Thiruvananthapuram district. According to the post-mortem report, the child suffered severe injuries to the head and chest, including seven fractured ribs, internal organ damage and bleeding inside the skull.

Investigators said the injuries indicate repeated physical assault over an extended period. The report also recorded burn marks on the child's genitals and the sole of his right foot, allegedly caused using a cigarette lighter.

Police have arrested Ashkar, the live-in partner of the child's mother, Akhila. During interrogation, Ashkar allegedly confessed to assaulting the toddler for several weeks and admitted that he viewed the child as an obstacle in his relationship with Akhila.

According to investigators, Ashkar routinely beat the child and stuffed cloth into his mouth to silence his cries. Police believe the fatal assault took place on May 29, when the accused allegedly struck the child on the head after becoming irritated by his crying.

Investigators said that after realising the child had died, Ashkar allegedly cleaned the house, attempted to destroy evidence and later took the toddler to a hospital, claiming that the child had choked on food and lost consciousness.

The probe has also uncovered earlier signs of abuse. Nearly a month before the child's death, Arshid was reportedly seen with both arms in plaster. Ashkar and Akhila had allegedly told neighbours and others that the injuries resulted from a fall from a bicycle.

Police are now examining the role of Akhila after she reportedly admitted that she was aware of the assaults and had witnessed her partner beating the child on several occasions. Investigators indicated that charges related to abetment could be added against her.

Authorities have invoked provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against Ashkar. The investigation is also looking into allegations that he had previously assaulted his first wife, leaving her physically disabled.

The case has sparked widespread outrage in Kerala, with child rights activists calling for stringent action against those responsible for the toddler's death.
