Guwahati, Jun 3: Ahead of the anticipated expansion of the Assam Council of Ministers, several prominent leaders are reportedly set to be inducted into the state cabinet, according to sources familiar with the developments.
Among those likely to secure ministerial berths are Jayanta Malla Baruah, Pijush Hazarika, Bimal Borah, Ashok Singhal and Ranoj Pegu. The leaders are regarded as experienced figures within the ruling establishment and have previously held key organisational and administrative responsibilities.

The cabinet expansion is expected to take place under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as the government seeks to strengthen its administrative framework and accelerate governance initiatives across sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare and rural development.
Political observers believe the exercise is aimed at improving administrative efficiency while maintaining a balance in regional representation, social equations and performance-based considerations within the government.
Sources further indicated that Rupali Langthasa and Tuliram Ronghangli remain among the contenders for inclusion in the ministry. Their possible induction is being closely watched as it could enhance representation from tribal and other underrepresented communities.
The reshuffle comes at a crucial time, with the government looking to reinforce its governance agenda and prepare for future political and electoral challenges.
Under constitutional provisions, the size of a state's Council of Ministers cannot exceed 15 per cent of the total strength of the Legislative Assembly. In Assam's 126-member Assembly, the maximum number of ministers, including the Chief Minister, is capped at 19.
An official announcement on the cabinet expansion is expected shortly, which will provide clarity on the final composition of the ministry. Until then, political circles in the state continue to witness intense speculation over possible inclusions and last-minute changes.
