Nilgiris tightens border surveillance after suspected Nipah case reported in Kerala

Coimbatore, Jun 14: The Nilgiris district administration has stepped up health surveillance along the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border following reports of a suspected Nipah virus infection in Kerala’s Kozhikode district.

Officials said extensive precautionary measures have been implemented to prevent any potential spread of the virus into Tamil Nadu, particularly in border regions that witness regular movement of people between the two states.

District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru said health personnel have been deployed at major interstate checkpoints, including Thaloor, Nadugani, Nambiarkunnu, Soladi and Pattavayal. Travellers and tourists entering Tamil Nadu from Kerala are being screened for symptoms commonly associated with Nipah virus infection.

The enhanced monitoring comes after preliminary reports from Kerala indicated that a patient in Kozhikode was suspected to have contracted the virus. While there is currently no confirmed threat in Tamil Nadu, authorities have adopted a preventive strategy in view of the close connectivity between the two neighbouring states.

Officials noted that several villages located near the border have residents who frequently travel to Kerala for employment, trade and other activities, resulting in substantial daily cross-border movement.

In addition to screening at checkposts, health authorities have expanded surveillance to areas with significant migrant worker populations. Regular health assessments are being conducted and monitoring mechanisms have been strengthened to quickly identify any suspected cases.

As part of the preparedness plan, all government hospitals, primary health centres, community health facilities and private medical institutions in the district have been directed to remain on high alert.

Healthcare providers have been instructed to immediately notify the Health Department if any patient presents symptoms that could be linked to Nipah virus infection, enabling rapid response and containment measures.

The district administration has also advised people arriving from Kerala to seek medical attention without delay if they develop symptoms such as fever, respiratory problems or other signs associated with the disease.

Officials emphasised that early detection, reporting and treatment remain critical in preventing transmission and ensuring public safety.

Collector Tanneeru stressed that the measures are purely precautionary and urged residents not to panic. She said the administration is maintaining close coordination with health authorities and continuously monitoring developments in Kerala.

With strengthened border screening, hospital preparedness and enhanced field surveillance now in place, officials expressed confidence in the district’s ability to respond effectively to any potential health emergency.

Authorities reiterated that there is currently no cause for alarm and that the ongoing surveillance is intended solely as a preventive safeguard.
