Imphal, Jun 23: Manipur chief minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Tuesday said the state stands as a shining example of unity in diversity, with 36 communities coexisting harmoniously, while highlighting Manipur's extraordinary contribution to Indian sports.
Addressing participants during the International Olympic Day Run and Tree Plantation programme organised by the Manipur Olympic Association at the Olympic Bhavan in Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal, the Chief Minister said Manipuri athletes have consistently brought pride to the nation through their performances on the global stage.

He asserted that no Indian contingent participating in major international sporting events could be considered complete without representation from Manipur.
"Manipur is a land where 36 communities have lived together in harmony for decades. The state has continuously brought laurels to the country through the outstanding achievements of its sportspersons," he said.
The Chief Minister noted that India's recognition of Manipur's sporting legacy led to the establishment of the country's first National Sports University in the state.
He informed that the university's infrastructure is nearing completion and said he had recently inspected the campus to review its progress.
Recalling his own journey as a Taekwondo player, Singh said sports teach values that extend far beyond winning medals.
"Representing the country at events such as the Asian Games and the Olympic Games is important, but the greatest lesson that sports impart is discipline," he said.
He urged young athletes to respect their teachers and coaches, promote communal harmony and cultivate determination and perseverance not only in sports but also in academics and daily life.
Speaking at the event, Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh, who also holds the Youth Affairs and Sports portfolio, said India is preparing its bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games and is actively identifying and nurturing sporting talent across various disciplines.
He pointed out that despite its relatively small population, Manipur has produced 19 Olympians, a feat unmatched by many larger states.
The minister also highlighted the need to modernise sports infrastructure, noting that much of the existing equipment dates back to the 1999 National Games and no longer meets current international standards.
He said the Chief Minister has assured an allocation of Rs 5 crore during the current financial year to procure modern sports equipment and strengthen facilities for athletes.
Govindas Singh also appealed to young sportspersons to remain disciplined, stay away from drugs and strive to become responsible citizens.
The programme concluded with the Chief Minister flagging off the International Olympic Day Run and participating in a tree plantation drive alongside ministers, legislators, sports administrators, senior officials and athletes.
Several MLAs, representatives of sports organisations and members of the Manipur Olympic Association were also present at the event.
